Eating Disorders and Substance Use: An Integrated Approach

$30.00

This 1-hour training introduces therapists to the unique challenges and opportunities in working with individuals who experience both eating disorders and substance use disorders. While these conditions are often treated in isolation, research shows that integrated care significantly improves outcomes and reduces relapse risk. Participants will learn how to recognize the shared reinforcement patterns that sustain both disorders, address shame as a central maintaining factor, and begin shifting toward recovery models that emphasize expansion, values, and resilience.

Objectives:

  • Identify the shared reinforcement cycle between eating disorders and substance use, including the role of shame in maintaining maladaptive behaviors.

  • Apply principles of integrated treatment to clinical practice, with attention to values-based work (ACT), self-compassion, and curiosity as core drivers of change.

  • Describe how recovery can be reframed as adding to life rather than deprivation, and translate this perspective into goal-setting with clients.
